procfs Overview

Use Cases for Debugging and Monitoring

  1. Kernel Module Debugging
Developers can inspect /proc files to verify that their modules are loaded correctly. For example, checking /proc/modules confirms module presence, while /proc/kallsyms (if the kernel is built with CONFIG_KALLSYMS enabled) reveals symbol tables for debugging.

  2. System Resource Monitoring
Tools like top, htop, or free rely on /proc data (e.g., /proc/meminfo and /proc/loadavg) to display real-time system metrics. Custom scripts can parse these files for automated monitoring.

  3. Troubleshooting Performance Issues
Analyzing /proc/diskstats or /proc/net/dev helps identify disk I/O bottlenecks or network latency. For instance, high values in /proc/diskstats under the "ios" column may indicate disk contention.

  4. Dynamic Configuration
Some /proc/sys/ entries allow runtime adjustments. For example, echo "4 4 1 7" > /proc/sys/kernel/printk changes the kernel message verbosity level by setting the console log level, minimum level, log buffer size, and console buffer size.
